Cigarette. Cigarettes are very difficult issues to be resolved. We know that smoking can cause many illnesses in humans. Among others, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, infertility, and most of the cancer. However, there are still many people who consume it. I think these have been very much research, information or anything that preach about the dangers of smoking. In some countries of the world (eg, USA) has begun to intervene through the programs and regulations to deal with cigarettes. Starting price of cigarettes made very high, to create a culture of smoking is a negative activity. However, it is very sad if we look at the conditions in Indonesia. In Indonesia, as much as 67% of men in Indonesia is a smoker and getting up every year. Given Indonesia also ranked top in the world on the number of men who smoke. We have encountered many smokers not only among adults, but had to pregnant women, students, children, even toddlers.
Problems of cigarettes in Indonesia are very complex. Smoking in Indonesia is considered “cultural” society. So it is a lucrative market and a paradise for the tobacco industry. Weak regulation and enforcement to be a big factor for the progress of the tobacco industry in Indonesia. Government to be “subject” to the tobacco industry since the tobacco industry can contribute to the country’s foreign exchange revenue stamp to Rp. 80 trillion. It is sure to be the biggest challenge for public health to address the issues of cigarettes, especially in Indonesia. Because not only point the problems in the health sector, but smoking is also linked to the fate of tobacco farmers, “culture” of Indonesia and the people who pro-cigarettes not to mention the members of the DPR (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat). A case that is, the disappearance draft addictive nicotine cigarettes as a sudden – came shortly before signed by the President SBY. This proves the power industry and the pro-smoking cigarettes is still very powerfull in Indonesia.
Therefore, as a public health professional, we should be concerned about these cigarettes. And the main focus we have to do is to prevent and reduce the number of new smokers.
Inactivity. Not finished with the issue of smoking, human health is threatened by inactivity. According to a study published by the Lancet, states that the number of death due to lack of activity as much as smoking worldwide. Cases of heart disease and diabetes in England/UK to 90,000 cases each year due to lack of physical activity. This fact is very surprising because the case is only slightly lower than the case due to the habit of smoking, which amounted to 100,000 cases each year. According to a study in the Lancet found among the people of a higher-income countries will be less likely to move. And one of these countries is UK. In the UK mentioned 2 from 3 of adults don’t to do enough physical activity. In addition, technological advances were not all be good. Technological advances in communications and transportation most needed by humans. Humans become less or lazy to have to move activities and reliance on technology.
The inactivity or lack of physical activity in some of the results of research can lead to an individual possessed factor in breast disease, colon and cervical cancer (in UK). In addition, lack of physical activity can also cause heart disease and diabetes. WHO estimates the risk of cancer by as much as 30% due to lack of physical activity and obesity. In Indonesia, according to data from Health Research Association (Riskesdas) in 2007, the national prevalence of obesity in the general population over the age of 15 years was 10.3% (men 13.9%, women 23.8%). While the prevalence of overweight children aged 6-14 years in males 9.5% and 6.4% in women. The data concluded that Indonesia also has the potential to be the number of cancer patients due to obesity or overweight and lack of activity.
It is also a challenge to public health nowadays and in the future. If not treated immediately, Inactivty will lead to a higher death rate again. Therefore, physical activity is very important to do like short sports, walking, gardening, and others. According to WHO guidelines at least two and a half hours a week of physical activity we do up a sweat.
